CEBU CITY, Feb. 18 (PIA) -- As the
biggest volunteer event in the country draws near, Cebuanos are encouraged to
respond to the annual call for nation-building by the Gawad Kalinga (GK).
GK Executive Director and newly-installed Philippine Information Agency Director General Jose Mari Oquiñena invited his fellow Cebuanos to join the Bayani Challenge from March 23 to 27.
“I encourage everybody to take part in the challenge to discover the hero in us and to connect with other heroes. For five days we can start to build a community of like-minded people,” said Oquiñena.
The five-day event this year will be done in 34 provinces across the country.
The theme for this year is: “Bayani Challenge 2013: Isang Bayan, Isang Bayanihan.”
Bayani Challenge 2013 aims to mobilize 70,000 volunteers to build at least 30 houses in 34 host provinces.
Volunteers will also refurbish schools, plant trees, and hold activities for children.
In Visayas, the challenge will be held in the following areas: San Remigio, Cebu; Bato, Leyte; Cadiz City, Negros Occidental; Mabinay, Negros Oriental; Calbayog, Samar; Maasin, South Leyte; and Antiquera and Talibon, Bohol.
Oquiñena also invited government employees to volunteer during the event “to connect with the people that we are serving.”
“It doesn’t have to be that we contribute money or materials, there’s actually no need of donation for funds. What is important that we meet the people we serve,” he said.
Oquiñena served as the guest speaker during the Visayas Bayani Challenge training held Feb. 15, at the Department of Health (DOH) Training Center in Cebu City.
Jerdie Beltran of GK Visayas said the training introduced the Bayani Challenge to representatives of the host provinces.
“We showed them how to do the linkages and networking since we need resources in terms of volunteers and help spread the word online and in the tri-media,” said Beltran.
