Press Freedom Week kicks off in Cebu

CEBU CITY, September 21 (PIA) –Cebu media celebrates Press Freedom Week, the only group in the country having such celebration the last 20 years.

“It is only in this week that regardless of media outfit, we come together for various activities to enjoy and to learn at the same time,” according to Quennie Snchez-Bronce, editor in chief of The Freeman Newspaper.

Bronce said, they have in line very helpful talks and workshops for the members of Cebu’s  media to learn from in relation to their job.

The event kicked off with members of the various tri media organizations participating in the  Press Freedom Walk last Sunday from from Fuente Osmena to the University of San Carlos Cultural Center.

A mass was celebrated followed by a showdown of presentations from the different newspapers. The Freeman, Cebu Daily News and Sunstar and the radio and television group, Kapisanan ng mga Broadcasters ng Pilipinas (KBP)

But prior to Sunday, they already had the Mr. And Ms. Press Freedom pageant where Freeman consistently grabbed the female title by reporter Jeanne Marvette Demecillo.  TV5 station anchor King Anthony Perez won as the Mr. Press Freedom.

The different for a  for this year include more inputs on social media in the delivery of news and information.  These include  “Social media, new media techniques applicable to editing for print and broadcast” by Yasmin Arquiza; “Online Libel-Freedom vs Responsibility” by Professor Harry Roque; and a meet up with bloggers and new media.

There is also a forum on Climate Change in coordination with Philippine Information Agency and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Another forum gives a glimpse of the media world to journalism enthusiasts “Reaching out to Future Journalists—The news commentary.

Globe Telecom is also expective to give out awards for Media Excellence and various fellowship and appreciation gatherings are scheduled by the business sector. (mbcn/FCC/PIA-Cebu)
