DUMAGUETE CITY, February 24 (PIA) -- Operation
Timbang (OPT) 2014 showed that malnutrition rate in Negros Oriental decreased
by 0.5% from 7.4% in 2013 to 6.9% in 2014.
Provincial
Nutrition Committee chair Antonieta Delfino said, that among the
municipalities in the province Vallehermoso still has the highest
incidence of malnutrition with a prevalence rate of 14% followed by Manjuyod
and Sta. Catalina ranking second and third with a prevalence rate of 10.1% and
10% respectively.
Mabinay ranked 4th
with 9.9% followed by Basay with 8.6% while Pamplona has the lowest prevalence
rate of 1.5%.
Delfino also presented
during the meeting the identified nutritionally depressed barangays as follows:
barangay Nalundan, Bindoy with malnutrition rate of 25.6%, Penahan, Bindoy -
24.6%, Tubod, Bindoy - 23.9%, Kabulakan, Sta Catalina - 21%, Malangsa,
Vallehermoso - 20.4%, Pangalaycayan, Bindoy - 19%, Pinalubngan, Tayasan- 18.9%,
Maaslum, Manjuyod - 18.8%, Saying, Tayasan - 18.5% & barangay Tabon,
Vallehermoso - 18.3%.
With these, Provincial
Nutrition Action Officer, Dr. Edgardo Barredo suggested to visit the
municipality of Bindoy to validate their Operation Timbang Data and to inform
the mayor of Bindoy that based on the data gathered, barangays Nalundan,
Penahan and Tubod ranked top 3 as nutritionally depressed barangays in the
province.
Among others, the
Provincial Nutrition Committee agreed to request by April this year for the release
of the 500,000 budget from the provincial government intended for the milk
feeding program for severely malnourished children in the province.
Dr. Barreda suggested
to identify the top 10 municipalities with severly malnourished children and
apportioned the amount of 500,000 to 50,000 per municipality to be given
directly to the LGUs.
The LGUs will
implement their supplemental feeding program under the supervision of the
provincial nutrition committee.
Furthermore, the
committee has scheduled its Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan
Implementation (MELLPI) on the LGUs nutrition program starting March to April
