EDC trains youths on disaster preparedness in E- Camp

VALENCIA, Negros Oriental, May 6 (PIA)  -- Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has trained 47 High School student-campers on disaster preparedness and environmental preservation during a seven-day Energy Camp at the geothermal site in Palinpinon, Valencia from April 30 to May 6.


According to Corporate Communications Officer Frances Ariola, the campers are composed of scholars from EDC’s host communities in Valencia with 20 students and seven from Bago City and Murcia in Negros Occidental, and 20 from Mt. Apo, Cotabato, Mindanao including the children of EDC employees.

“This fun learning activity has helped the children to understand why renewable energy such as geothermal is the best power option and why they are fortunate to have an abundant source of it in their own province," said Ariola.

No on its 12th year, the E-camp is a summer camp designed to provide a productive, educational and enjoyable activity for youths living in the company’s host communities.

The children shared their amazing experience not only in sports and physical development activities, but also a friendly team competition.

While learning about the importance and benefits of geothermal energy and environmental protection, the campers also engaged in survival training with first aid lesson under disaster preparedness, said Ariola.

E-camp combines classroom and outdoor activities, addressing th need to develop a prson’s whole being, both mind and body.

Camper Nicole Calumpang, 15, of Immaculate Heart Academy (IHA) in Tanjay City, excitedly shared her experiences how she enjoyed the martial arts exercises, dance, wall climbing, zipline, slide for life, among others.

Nicole said the basic knowledge she learned on first aid application and environmental protection such as recycling, reuse, and reduce may be applied at home and shared with her friends.

E-camp concluded today with a camp graduation at the geothermal site.

The “Father of the E-camp” and EDC’s former president and CEO Paul Aquino, EDC Business Unit head for Negros Island James Villaroman, and other EDC officials are expected to grace the occasion and congratulate the youth-campers. (rmn/jct/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
