MANDAUE City, May 9 (PIA)---Almost P200,000 worth of substandard lights were recently disposed by the Department of Trade and Industry here.

Zaide Bation, DTI-7 products standards officer said, other than being mandated to round up substandard electronic gadgets such as lights and bulbs, they are also tasked to disposed these properly making sure that no human, animal and the environment will be harmed.

DTI-7 chose to dispose the 2,172 sets of Christmas lights, eight boxes of light bulbs and 12 jumbo bags of wires at Maritrans Recycler, the only recycler plant in Cebu that can properly dispose electronic materials.

According to Teddylyn Reyes, Maritrans pollution control officer, the light bulbs will be subject to two major processes.

The wires will be separated from the bulbs and these will be fed into the cable recycling plant where the recycled bronze is one of the end product.

On the other hand, the bulbs will be dipped into the bulb eater where it will be treated for presence of mercury and other toxics.  Its end product will be shipped outside the country after treatment as another raw material.

DTI said, these products were confiscated from eight establishments in Cebu pursuant to an administrative order on substandard electronic gadgets and other products.

They believed that the conduct of the disposal activity promotes awareness and enhances consumer welfare through the prohibition of the sale of substandard products.

It also encourages consumers to buy safe and quality products which comply with relevant standards.

DTI warned that inspection and confiscation are still ongoing at random. (mbcn/FCC/PIA7-Cebu)
