DUMAGUETE CITY, May 4 (PIA) --- Filipino traditional games dubbed “Magdula Ta” is part of the May 7 grand launching activities for the declaration of Negros Oriental as “conflict manageable”.
Some 12 games will be played by different groups of children at 9:30 a.m. at the Freedom Park, Capitol Area, Dumaguete Cty.
The “Magdula Ta” will start shortly after the sky diving and band drill exhibition of the Armed Forces of the Philippines along with kite flying competition at 8:00 a.m. at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum.
Traditional games to be played include kayukok, bukong, bato lata, piko, satong , patentero, takarang, luksong tinik, halas-halas, takyan, bolan-bolan, biko, and jolens.
Different non-government organizations under the Oriental Negros Children’s Advocacy Network (ONCAN) will handle each game with their children-beneficiaries and some from the Department of Education and out-of-school-youths.
“The public is invited to watch all the games to appreciate in reviving the traditional sports in this time high-technology generation,” said ONCAN president Baby Jambora.
ONCAN has initiated these different games for children not only to value local sports but to show support on some peace initiatives that the province has achieved.
ONCAN is an umbrella organization of NGOs working for and with children in the province which cater mostly to the needs of children at risk; street children, orphans, children in conflict with the law, children with disabilities and those who come from disadvantaged families.
It advocates education on the importance of the healthy environment for children.
Over 400 participants are expected to witness and join the declaration of "Conflict-Manageable and Development Ready Province" which will also be attended by key officials of the Department of National Defense, Philippine Army, the Philippine National Police, and the provincial government.
