Senatorial candidates invited to ‘discernment recollection’ in Cebu

CEBU CITY, Feb. 6 (PIA) -- Senatorial candidates for the May 2013 synchronized national and local elections are welcome to attend the one-day “Discernment Recollection” activity initiated by two Church-based organizations in Cebu City.

Dilaab Foundation, Inc. and the Couples for Christ have earlier teamed up to hold a one-day gathering for May 2013 candidates, election stakeholders, and voters on Feb. 15 at the Convention Hall of Sacred Heart Center, this city.

Manila Archbishop Jose Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle will be the recollection master.

Jenny Tan, project coordinator of Dilaab Foundation’s Circles of Discernment for Empowerment (CIDE), said they are inviting all candidates in Cebu to join the recollection activity.

The invitation is also extended to senatorial candidates who might be interested to take part in the recollection activity, said Atty. Carlo Fortuna, a volunteer of Dilaab.

The discernment recollection is divided into two sessions, with the 8 a.m. to 12 nn activity for election stakeholders and the afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. for election candidates.

Atty. Fortuna explained that the gathering is in line with Pres. Benigno Aquino’s “Daang Matuwid” program which, he said, is more a way of life.

“The Daang Matuwid is not just when you’re in government already but starts when you come into office which is through the electoral process. So this is what we’re doing now, by ensuring that the conscience of our candidates, government regulators, election stakeholders, and those involved in the process is based fear of God,” he said.

After the session, participating candidates will be made to sign a wallet-sized covenant where they pledge to uphold the integrity of a person and the sacredness of votes.

Candidates will also be asked to fill out the LASER Test, or the Lifestyle, Action, Supporters, Election Conduct, Reputation Test, which will help voters discern the candidates and vote wisely. (RMN/PIA-7 CEBU)
