Cebu Province vows for conservation of sea corals, marine lives

CEBU, June 1(PIA) --- The province of Cebu commits to join the Coral Triangle Day with its initiative for the protection and conservation of corals and other marine life.

Coral Triangle Day is set to be celebrated on June 9 with prior activities on June 7 this year that will give emphasis on the protection and conservation as well as awareness on the importance of marine lives.

Lined up activities for the celebration include province wide beach clean up and mangrove planting. Since June 9 falls on Monday with most of the schools are expected to start classes beach clean-up and mangrove planting will be done on June 7.

Cebu Provincial Board Member and chairman on the Committee on Environmental Protection Thaddeo Ouano said plans are already made for the participation of the entire province for the event.

Ouano said there is already a Sanggunian resolution that mandates all local government units (LGUS) in the province of Cebu to participate in the activities in line with the Coral Triangle Day celebration.

Ouana said the province of Cebu supports activities that are geared towards protection and conservation of marine life and the environment.

Ouano added that a resolution has been passed for the amendment of the provincial Fishery Code to include conservation of hammerhead shark and “samo” and other species not included in the code.

“We are done with the meeting and we will continue with the public hearing,” Ouano said.

He then invited the information officers from the various government organizations and other stakeholders to be present during the public hearing.

Ouano also urged LGUs to intensify the creation of a task force on illegal fishing within their respective jurisdiction.

“Cebu Province through Gov. Junjun Davide plan to conduct a contest on the best marine sanctuary in the province. This is also a way of encouraging the protection and conservation of corals,” Ouano concluded.  (mbcn/AYS/PIA7)
