SIQUIJOR,
October 14 (PIA) -- Siquijor province will likely experience the effects
of a “strong” El Niño starting December this year or January of next
year.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical
and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Visayas Director Oscar
Tabada, in his update on the latest forecast El Niño, said Siquijor
is one of the 17 provinces to be affected by dry condition in
October, 26 provinces in November, and 35 provinces in December this year.
In January, Siquijor, with the rest
of Central Visayas, is among the 57 provinces to be affected with drought, he
said.
Tabada said consensus El Nino
Southern Oscillation prediction indicate the continuation of strong El
Nino conditions during the August to October 2015 season and will last up to
March, April and May of 2016.
Significant reduction in rainfall is
predicted beginning September 2015 to February 2016 over most parts of
the country and that slightly warmer than average temperature is expected
during the forecast period.
Recently, he said rivers and
springs are drying up, water shortage is experienced, and crops are dying in
some parts of the country while human and animal health conditions are at stake
due to heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heat stroke, and worst
death.
The year 2015, he said, is
still running to be the hottest year and he advised locals of the
following actions to be taken under hot weather conditions:
- When engaged in outdoor work or activities, pay
attention to health conditions. Bring along water and sunscreen and reduce
prolonged exposure under sunlight.
- Ensure good air ventilation in indoor environment;
beware of health and well being of elderly or persons with chronic medical
conditions; and take precautionary measures for possible fires.
Tabada said preparations should
be intensified in the community starting from education campaigns in
agriculture, and water supply to caring for the environment.
