SU prexy underscores commitment to service with opening of mission clinic

NEGROS ORIENTAL, June 28 (PIA) – Silliman University President Ben Malayang underscored their commitment to service in his message during the soft opening of the Silliman University Marina Mission Clinic (SUMMC) in Dauin town recently.

SUMMC is now a primary hospital offering 24/7 services to indigents in the town of Dauin and its neighboring municipalities.

In his message, Malayang noted how the university and the health care facility are anchored in the spirit of service.

“Both are institutions driven by service, not profit. Just like Marina, emphasis is on service, more than anything else,” he stressed.

He also pointed out that while facilities at SUMMC have been improved, it must not lose sight of how it is intended to afford quality basic medical care to many who are in need.

SUMMC was from the family of the late Don Daniel Z. SyCip whose mission was for medical care to reach hinterland communities and make an impact in the lives of the poor.

The facility named after Marina SyCip, the late mother of Don Daniel.

It was also established to encourage Don Daniel’s daughter, Dr. Fe SyCip-Wale, who is a pediatrician, to work in the country instead of going abroad and focus more on giving back to the country.

It started operating in 1972 as a maternity clinic.

Now that it is recognized as a primary hospital, SUMMC is now able to admit patients, undertake maternal and childbirth under normal conditions and perform minor surgeries within 24/7 basis.

On the other hand, Malayang also reached out to local officials in Dauin, Bacong, Zamboanguita, and Valencia to consider the clinic as part of their terms of service.

“We are confident that Marina will become a big player with respect to the larger vision of Negros Oriental,” he said.

He also reminded the staff of SUMMC to keep the dream that started the clinic some 40 years ago.

““We merely level up the dream but we will not lose the dream—to serve as much as we can with whatever little we have,” he noted. (ral/PIA7-Negros Oriental/with reports from SU-OIP)
