DUMAGUETE CITY, March 28 (PIA) --- Dumaguete City has encouraged the public to join the nationwide observance of Earth Hour on March 29.

City Administrator William Ablong said the city as well as the province of Negros Oriental signs up to promote Earth Hour and help mitigate climate change.

Earth Hour calls for people across the globe to switch off their lights for at least an hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (PHL time), in a symbolic act of the global campaign for efficient energy use and collective action against climate change.

Ablong said the government will switch off the lights along Rizal boulevard, Quezon park, and City Hall.

This year’s event is centered on the theme “Use Your Power to Make Change a Reality."

This aims to create awareness of people taking responsibility towards a sustainable future by turning the lights off for one hour and spread the message that individuals working collectively can create impact and come to blow even the mightiest disaster.

Meanwhile, according to Syril Repe of City Information Office, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Dumaguete City conducted fire drill  on March 28 at Hotel Essencia  as part of its continuing information and education campaign on fire awareness.

The drive is aimed at teaching employees and customers of business firms on what to do during fire such as evacuation, first aid, fire-fighting skills, using the fire extinguishers, traffic control, and security, among others.

Repe said the participants during the fire drill were composed of BFP Rescue and fire volunteers, One Rescue, Silliman University Rescue, Chinese Volunteers, Rescue 348, staff and management of Hotel Essencia, City Disaster Office, among others.

March has been declared as national Fire Prevention Month. (rmn/JCT/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
